Transformative Journey: A Pickleball Mission in the Heart of the Philippines
In August of 2023, my life took an unexpected turn as I embarked on a mission trip to the Philippines. Little did I know that this journey, aimed at teaching pickleball and ministering to street kids, would profoundly transform me in ways I could never have anticipated. The adventure kicked off in Cebu, where fatigue from a 30-hour flight and an 8-hour layover lingered. Our first challenge presented itself at a clinic in Cebu, where we were met with 40+ eager kids and adults, a mere three pickleball courts, and a significant language barrier. Overwhelmed and uncertain, my partner Kendall Graves and I, assisted by the incredible Diane Thomas, somehow managed to pull off a successful three-hour clinic. The crowded venue became a space of peace, and as we wrapped up, the resounding request for us to return echoed through the air.
From Cebu, we embarked on a 2-3 hour drive to Bogo City, our destination for ministry and pickleball teachings. The ensuing two weeks unfolded with a carefully planned schedule, beginning each day with breakfast at a local spot before heading to the Humanility Compound.Every morning welcomed us with love and gratitude. The children, our eager companions, would rush to greet us, offering a heartfelt gesture by placing our hands to their foreheads. The warmth of their welcome set the tone for the transformative experiences that awaited us.On the first day, the kids orchestrated a heartwarming "Welcome Event," featuring traditional dances and affirmations of positive anticipation for the days ahead. This was followed by pickleball orientations, clinics, meals, fellowship, and nights filled with the sound of pickleball rallies. While the schedule remained relatively consistent, each day brought unique moments to cherish. Harvesting dragon fruit, tending to the garden, constructing pathways to the dorms, witnessing progress on the boys' dorm, exhilarating rides in motorcycle carts, playing basketball in the rain, Jamar's unexpected encounter with goats, savoring the delicious dragon fruit, partaking in community meals, contributing to the school's upkeep, learning the art of jewelry-making – these were the highlights that painted our days with vibrancy.
One of the most poignant moments occurred when we handed out paddles to all the kids. Their excitement was palpable, and they even requested our signatures on their cherished paddles. Beyond the sports and scheduled activities, we took the time to appreciate the simple yet profound moments on the compound. As the trip concluded with a visit to the beach on the last day, I couldn't help but reflect on the profound impact those two weeks had on me. This mission wasn't just about pickleball; it was about forging connections, learning from one another, and realizing the transformative power of love and community. The Philippines had given me more than I could ever give back, and my heart overflowed with gratitude for the opportunity to be part of something so beautifully impactful.
